VERY nice, serendipitous discovery, Mike. Congratulations!
Don't fully understand the British system of "registering" vehicles (where I live in Canada, a car wears a licence plate specific to the current owner, with a number that has no historic significance - in fact the licence plates/number get changed whenever the car is sold or de-insured for a period, or when the rear licence plate is stolen for illegal use on another vehicle) . . .
But I'll look forward to hearing exactly the manufacturing date. It might be pretty close to my car: February 1970 (7002040010N). It has the cut-outs with black plastic buckets behind the driving/fog lamps, bonded windscreen, 8 gauge dash, etc.

Great find Mike. Couldn't agree more, it's all about the story!

Well, what great good fortune! That is a marvellous story and thank you for sharing it.
I was recently contacted by a lister who had found a Sprint VIN plate in a box of parts. We identified the car and were able to reunite the surprised but delighted car owner with the correct original VIN plate for his car.
It's great when these quirks of fate spring up!

Mike,
Well done. You will be able to get an age related plate if you want.
Cheers

Hi Guys, sorry for delay, I have been travelling. Thanks for the wishes.
Yes, I have secured the Doc's. They need to belong to the car.
Up to present I have only seen the copy of the bill of sale showing 13th Jan 1970 as when he picked it up. I believe it is a November 69 car. May find out more.
And yes, I will be sending to DVLA to see about the first registration, now that I have it.
I am taking it for an MOT in the morning. I will be having a ride up, in the car, to meet the first owner. He and his friend would very much like to see it. His friend was being passed by said car when it hit a brick (at speed) and deflated the rear tyre. I am told that he even has some black and white photos of the wreck.
I think this calls for a few photos when I pay the visit to pick up the Doc's.

A further update.
I managed to obtain the original reg along with all the old documents. Had to have a DVLA inspection. Now done about 1000 miles since getting it on the road about 8 weeks ago.Lots of trips to Derbyshire.
See some photos of today. Went up to the Lakes on Saturday morning and stopped for a couple of nights. Could not resist a few shots. Running really well. Engine dry of oil after having done Brian Bucklands paper gasket and Welseal on the front chest and water pump. Well done Brian. The only oil I can see is very slight weeping from the cork cam gasket. Can't believe it. I have been examining after ever run. Also bedded through bolts etc in silicon.
