Elan being used for Fraud

PostPost by: Middlewich » Thu Mar 22, 2018 11:22 pm

Hi,

I am new to the Elan forum, but felt compelled to share my story, I have been looking for an Elan S2 for a while, I was surfing eBay when a too good to be true Elan came up, I enquirer for the fun of it, and since then shared some correspondence with the fraudster. It was a lovely 1971 Red and Gold version, for ?4K delivered.
I have since reported this to the fraud squad, but the photos will be of somebodies Elan, as I a, guessing they have pullled them from somewhere (eBay is my guess)

So if you are the owner of a 1971 red and gold Elan S2, registration plate SPO 983K, then photos of your car are being used for fraudulent activities.

If you want more info then please PM me.

These ebay "classic car" scams are widespread at the moment, & at one time only a couple of weeks ago there were something like 150 UK ebay listings that were clearly scams - all being posted by one individual (but under different names & using different ebay accounts)

The wording of them all was basically the same, & the "location" of the car was the same (it would appear from the text that his grandfather owned all these cars!!!!)

As a committee of The Sunbeam Lotus OC I followed one particular example of an Avon model Lotus Sunbeam that the guy continued to relist every time I - & others - got it taken down. This went on for over a week, with the same post appearing every day, but using different (hacked?) ebay accounts, & every day we got it taken down. The pics being used were from a genuine ebay listing that had been posted last year

I have also seen a number of Elan postings that were also clearly scams

Ebay seem to have no way of stopping this, though they have been acting promptly once contacted

The same thing has been happening with rare / high value vintage guitars, & goodness knows what else

If it looks too good to be true then it probably is (in this case even the description of the car was wrong??)

" Ebay seem's to have no way of stopping this"

Because E-bay has no incentive to stop this! It's not costing them anything and they are not about to spend anything to stop it!
Doesn't England have any laws to go after these scammers? My god, everyone seems to know who this guy is and he's not looking out through steel bars!

John.
That Sussex Sports Cars Blue Elan you directed us to is also a bit strange. There are two different cars.
One is a DHC with black sills and no badge.
But one photo shows a FHC with body coloured sills and and a badge on the rear wing.
What's going on?
Go on bid for it, See how many you get.

they also offer a Jaguar XK140 FHC with "factory sunroof", factory being probably short for add-on Webasto I suppose...

It's strange how strong claims have a tendancy to be counter productive.
