S130 windscreen just fitted

PostPost by: checkrail » Fri Apr 12, 2019 12:07 pm

If there is anybody in the Lincoln area needing a bonded windscreen changing I can strongly recommend Chris at F&S Windscreens, first class service fitted a top tint Triplex/Pilkington in 24 hours.

I know this will upset the purists but he suggested using a wide rubber seal instead of the chrome plastic as per original and I decided on this and glad that I did.

He also changed the rear screen chrome infill, no charge.

Many thanks to the +2 owner in Caister who suggested him.

Interesting..
Just to clarify please..
Are you saying that you fitted a rubber seal in place of the original bonded in type screen? If so what did you do about the lack of an upstand in the fibreglass to hold the screen rubber in place along the bottom which the bonded screen version I understand doesn't have?

I am not sure I can answer that Alan as I was not there when he changed it. All I know it is bonded in and the rubber sits really tight on the body, he said the job went really well with no problems.

There should be some photos in due course on F&S' website

20180817_120400.jpg and
1Follow my previous posts about bonded screens.I have not seen a good chrome finisher without crinkles or lifting so for the last five years I have used a modern solid rubber section which fits almost flush with screen and roof and is cheap so Chapman would have used if available at the time
Today I bonded the rubber to the screen ready for bonding to the body.See photos. The corner shot is another finished car.See how the rubber clings to the curve.

Hi John

Glad it worked out well for you. As I said, I had been very impressed with him, when I dealt with him.

Cheers

Andy

Sorry I am still confused..Mixed messsages I think on the +2 variants? However I am very keen to understand what you have done due to having to do something with mine eventually.

The +2 in the pic looks to me like an early +2 in which the windscreen is held in by a rubber and center insert, unlike the later +2S 130's in which the screen and chrome trim is actually bonded to the frame.
So just to be sure I understand correctly..
Are you saying that you have removed a 'bonded' screen and replaced the bonding and chrome trim with a rubber and insert?.. aka like an early +2?...In which case my question is still what you did about the lack of upstand, which the bonded in screen doesn't have, along the bottom of the windscreen frame surround.....Always assuming we are talking later type +2S's. Without the upstand and something to affix the rubber to and hold the screeen in place I am struggling to see what is holding the screen in place. Did you create an upstand out of fibreglass along the bottom for the rubber to fit to?
If you have found a solution to this problem I am greatly interested in what you did...I just need to know how you did it?

Thanks,

Alan.

Hello Alan
The photo is a1973 plus 2 with bonded screen and the rubber is a similarr shape to the chrome version but more flexible and bonds to the car with no alteration

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the clarification of what you have done. All clearer now! Apologies if I was being a bit thick. I should have read your previous posts on this subject!
So basically you have ditched the usual chrome trim, substituted it with a wide rubber seal rubber and bonded the assembly in as normal I assume now with one of the Sikaflex or similar sealants. I see you previously mentioned Dinitrol?
The modified rubber where did you get from/who sells it?

Thanks,

Alan
