1964 Lotus Elan S1 SOLD

PostPost by: Certified Lotus » Thu Jul 04, 2019 11:19 pm

If you read this forum you already know this Bourne body Elan S1 (26/0379). Restored and built as a street GTS car. Won 1st place at the national Lotus Owners Gathering (LOG 38) last year for S1 & S2 category. Rebuilt with an open wallet and almost 2 years of labor. Would be very difficult to replicate at any price.

viewtopic.php?t=34178

Read Tony Thompson?s list of parts strongly recommended to build a GTS car. I bought almost all of them. Engine built by Quicksilver Racing. 26R Chassis.

This Elan is very fast and rip snorting loud when you put your foot into it.

It?s not a show car. I built it to drive.

$60,000 firm. No trades. I have much more invested in it. Comes with an extra full set of freshly painted steel wheels, an original wooden steering wheel, newly restored OEM hardtop and custom indoor car cover.

Chris, you knew I was going to sell it. Moving and down sizing our home. Getting rid of all the sports cars (I?ve got many other hobbies).

You have driven this car, perhaps a few comments to those that don?t know it as well........

I am building my car to this spec. I hope it doesn't cost me that much to build.
Good Luck with the sale, it looks very nice.

Depends on the engine build. I spent $14K just on that. All the other parts add up quickly. Don?t even ask me about the labor. At this price the labor is free and the car is heavily discounted.

I know someone else who built an early Elan GTS car and he had $65K into it and without the engine build I have.

Good luck on your build. I enjoyed every moment of it!

I've seen this car in person at a local show and it's beautiful and clearly well built.

Glen
It is with a heavy heart I acknowledge your decision and reasons for selling. Yes I have driven this car and I can hardly imagine a better streetable performance Elan S1. I was also involved with the rebuild and the effort and attention to detail you and Drew put into it was strictly first class. Tough to say but good luck with the sale. :)

Thanks, for the info. We are luckily spending nowhere near 65k for our rebuild and have a rebuilt engine by one of the top engine builders for ?5 000 (I cannot disclose his name) the complete rolling chassis cost ?25 000 and that includes 26R gearbox and 150BHP engine.
May I ask, what BHP are you getting?

Engine Dyno. Glad you can build it for less. Good luck!

Having recently gone through (and still continuing) an extensive rebuild of my S4 to a street GTS spec like Glen, I can attest that it would be difficult to replicate Glen's car for what he is asking.

As far as those that say they "can do it for less", it all depends on the specification that you are building to. Items add up fast when you address all elements on the car: engine, transmission, differential, electrical, carburetors, cooling, chassis, suspension, wheels/tires, exhaust, body, paint, interior, safety, etc. If you touch all these points and upgrade to GTS spec (or better) as Glen has done, you can end up with an excellent result, but not at low cost. Moreover, if you add in the 100's of hours of labor, unless you do most of the work yourself, you easily reach rather large numbers.

BTW, an engine rebuild, by a professional engine builder, for 5000 pounds I would think might not include much in the way of upgrading: Head mods, bigger valves, high lift cams, rods, pistons, carb work, dyno time ... Again, depends on the spec you want or just a "refresh" of an existing engine.

Hello, you are right, it is an expensive job. However, I have only included costs that other people will be payed. All engine parts have already been tuned and need putting back together (hence low price) and the rest covers the cost of bits we don't have to complete the chassis.
I would estimate around ?15 000 from that point to finish the car off so with all of the other bits, it will have cost me around ?55 000, not as cheap as it sounds when you add it all up.
So to conclude, you are, of course right but I had only included the parts that our friend would be doing and not the parts that I would be doing ourselves.
Hope that clears it up for you.

Interesting. Originally you said you hoped your car didn?t cost as much to build to same spec but your already estimated at $61,773 (today?s exchange rate) not including labor. Your starting to get nearer to what I spent on parts and the base car.

Never the less, if your going to build a GTS Elan, it?s not cheap. If you have to pay someone else to do the work, it?s very very expensive.

Yes, I realised that I had not included the price of the car on top of the work needed. (I also didn't realise you had priced your car in dollars  )
I find that after all of the hard work, paint appears to be the killer, ?7500 for a respray by a competent painter!
