Wobbly Wheel!

PostPost by: flyingvee » Fri Feb 20, 2004 6:54 pm

Hello all!
After a bit of an argument with some ice and a kerb, I have a pretty noticeable rear offside wheel wobble. :( My mechanic had a look and tells me I have bent NOT the driveshaft exactly, but the section the wheel attaches to which in turn attaches to the driveshaft. I think he said "it was the bit your bearings go through" (sorry if that's arse-about-face). I'm sorry I can't give it a proper name, not being very mechanical, but if anyone has any suggestions as to exactly what this bit is called and where I might get one, I would be very grateful indeed!
Many thanks!

Sounds as if your outer stub axle is bent. Not an easy replacement job, I'm afraid.

Hello Flyingvee,

From what you describe it sounds like the outer driveshaft is the problem. I personally would have checked the runout on the hub itself as the shaft is pretty robust. Spydercars apparently have some secondhand shafts at ?45 each (hubs also if needed!).

Getting the part will I think be the easy bit. To replace the offending item you will need to remove the hub. DO NOT use a standard hub puller, you will most probably bend the hub (if it isn't already). A garage familiar with the Lotus car is your best bet! Wheel bearing replacement is also a good idea while the hub is off, especially given that you have thumped it pretty hard.

Hope this helps.
