atmosphere and thus comply with the 1971 U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards, the following modifications in the form of an 'evaporative
circuit' have been incorporated into the fuel system (see
illustrations). The avaporative loss control system consists basically of an activated charcoal canister which collects the fuel vapour given off from the fuel tank vent. Test on the carburettor float bowl vents, showed that the evaporation from this source was negligible. Additional to the fuel tank Is a catch tank, which cannot be filled through the main tank fuel filler neck. This catch tank prevents neat fuel from reaching the charcoal canister in conditions of extreme heat, or violent vehicle manoeuvres. The absorbed vapour in the charcoal is 'purged' by clean air while the engine is running, via throttle edge drillings. The system is effectively maintained by renewing the charcoal canister at intervals of every 48,000 (60,000 km.) |
