How do I figure out how much to shim my steering rack?

On most brand new galvanized chassis, there are numbers scribed and painted (or felt-tipped) on the left and right rack mount flanges which represent the number of shims to be inserted to eliminate (or minimize) bump steer. They show the thickness of the required shims in thousandths of an inch.

This provides a starting point. Alternatively, if you want to check, measure from the centerline of the front lower wishbone stud perpendicularly 2.190 inches - this point is the required centerline of the rack mounting face.

Additionally, some owners with modern tyres suggest raising the rack by a further millimeter or two can reduce any nervousness in the steering. This is not a factory-authorized mod, just a suggestion!
