Sprint Decals on S4

PostPost by: William2 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 10:05 am

I was considering fitting a set of Sprint Decals to my S4 SE to break up the mono regency red paintwork. Interested in opinions, even if they are forthright!! I know this wouldn't be for the purists but is this not such a good idea especially from the value and insurance perspectives? I seem to recall years ago that there were decals available saying "Elan S4 SE" or similar but as far as I am aware these are unobtainable.

Other than the Sprint decal, Lotus applied one on a limited number of S3 Elans below the door line. But they tended to come unstuck easily. Simply read Lotus in black followed by stripes. The Sprint decals only look good on duo painted cars and should be confined to genuine Sprints in my opinion. Jim

Might be worth checking with Sue Miller, I think she had some variations.

I have a Regency Red Sprint and toyed with the idea of adding decals, to the point of actually buying a set. I didn't fit them in the end but these fotos of my 'quick & dirty' mock-ups might be of interest:

I quite fancied the lower position actually!

I think the photos rather prove Jim's point.

I have an S4 SE and it's painted as a sprint in Gold Leaf red over white.
I like it, it's my car!

Don`t do it, people might think you`re pretending your car is something it isn`t, which might seem a bit sad.

I'm with Jim, unsurprisingly, as I am a purist!

The Sprint in Regency Red over Cirrus White is a rare combination. It does look good, though.

+1 for the don't to it argument.

Even on Sprints i think because the front and rear bumpers are at different levels it's difficult to make the stripe looks good, i kick myself regularly that i fitted my side decals......

If it was me and i wasn't bothered about it looking original i'd go with some thing like this (elj221c post 9 down) lotus-elan-f19/side-stickers-for-t25397.html

The original owner of this Sprint paid extra to have the car one colour and no stripes. He bought the car for his own pleasure and the satisfaction that it was a Sprint. He didn`t care if the uninitiated thought it was something less. That`s what I call class (!)

As has been stated above, Sprints could be ordered in a single colour at the surcharge of an extra ?15 !

There is an all white Sprint on the forum, complete with the gold Sprint stripes that looks very neat, but as mentioned above, I'd suggest not using the Sprint stripe, your car is a S4, but maybe use a stripe of a different colour or if gold not in the Sprint style.

Lotus would supply an Elan in any colour you desired, so nobody can say a particular colour scheme is not authentic, just don"t make it into a Lookie Likely :)
Cheers

When I had my sprint repainted a few years ago it was the dilemma of colours; stripes or no stripes.

I played around with Photoshop a little, and what I determined was that stripes midway down the sides on a monochrome car just looked odd some how.

On a two tone car they make sense.
Placed at the sill level on a monotone car they look neat.

Obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all that, but its not a route I would go down.
