Another heresy

True confessions time: I've never been particularly fond of the way that the fuel filler neck and cap stand off of the Elan body. It spoils the lines a bit IMO.

Has anyone ever recessed the body at that point, and lowered the cap to about half its height? Something along these lines (but not quite so deep:

And if I were to go that route, I'd probably just swap the cap for an Aston cap as pictured in brushed alloy. Actually, I might do that regardless.

Hi Jim,
If you just recessed the cap you would need to provide some drainage for rainwater or spilled fuel. It might be better to go for a flush fitting cap with a seal to the body.

I must confess I too have never really liked the original filler cap, I have wondered about the Aston cap too...

Thanks Roger. I hadn't really given that any thought, because it never rains down here :D

But I'll take your thoughts into account if I go forward. At the least, I'll probably do an Aston cap, because I love the look.

Still in the todo list ...
I am going to ask Axminster specialists panels to quote me for an Aston fuel cap 2.5' + locking inner cap + the correct fuel tubing size with the welded threaded collar.

Thanks for the link Christian; that's very useful.

Perhaps I can satisfy my aesthetic sense by getting the Aston cap as flush with the rear deck as possible. We'll see.

Jim,

I think you're set on recessing the cap but there is a simple fix you may have not considered. Every Elan that I have ever seen has the cap parallel to the body of the car and sloping to the rear. This would be fine if the body was a flat panel sloping to the rear but at the fuel filler, the Elan body slops to the rear and to the right. By loosening one of the hose clamps and turning the filler cap about 30 degrees counter clockwise, the slope of the cap will match the slope of the body and you can lower it. Give it a try before you open your wallet.

Hi,
I've always rather liked the original filler! - not sure why, maybe 'cos it's just different to most other cars.
